Grocery shopping through an unprocessed eye

I’m sure that most people who decide to go unprocessed are much more committed to making things from scratch.  Me however- not so much.  We are using what Andrew calls “the kitchen test.” (http://www.eatingrules.com/2012/09/the-kitchen-test/ ) As long as all the ingredients in a product are things you could potentially make in your kitchen… then you’re ok to buy the product.  This definition is particularly useful for us because I just plain don’t have the time to make my own cheese or yogurt (among other things).

That being said, our first trip to the grocery store looking for unprocessed foods took about 2 hours.  We read labels on all the products we usually buy, and were pleasantly surprised that a lot of things were are already buying are unprocessed, like our cheese, cream cheese, butter.  A lot of things however need to be replaced.  We were unable to find a hummus at Aldi or Giant that did not have some sort of preservative in it.  This needs to be fixed pronto.  I need hummus in my life.  I know I can make it.  That’s not the point.  It would be much easier to just find a brand that we can eat.

Another big hurdle is going to be bread.  Apparently no one makes bread without adding sugar to it.  So… we went to bed bath and beyond and spent $250 on a bread maker on Sunday (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=17407503 ).  There will be a fabulous post on making bread once the bread maker gets delivered, they didn’t have it in stock in the store.  We read lots of reviews and were stuck on this particular bread maker.  Hopefully it will be as amazing as promise.  But I digress…

Giant carries a brand called Nature’s Promise.  We bought some tortilla chips and canned tomatoes for pasta sauce.  They had a lot of good items… but a lot of it still had sugar in it.  We will definitely be buying more Nature’s promise in the future though.
